What is an Automatic Watch? People all over the world wear watches either out of habit or as a piece of jewelry, but whatever the purpose, the fact remains that wearing a watch will never go out of fashion.

What is an automatic watch and a regular watch. You may know that an automatic watch does not require winding and keeps on ticking as long as it is on your wrist.

If you are looking for a watch in terms of its machinery, design, color, and movement it will vary from person to person. In terms of the design and color a huge amount of variety can be found in the market, but for movement, there are only two types available and that is mechanical or quartz movement.

Mechanical Movement vs. Quartz Movement

The mechanical movement is a sweeping motion and is mostly preferred over quartz movement. This is because watches that are designed to function on mechanical movements have a certain level of sophistication and craftsmanship involved that adds an added element of luxury to them. Mechanical movements are divided  into two types, manual and automatic, each with their own unique characteristics.

Manual movement watches are considered to be the most traditional versions of watches, so automatic movement watches are given more importance. Automatic watches, also called self-winding watches, work with the help of a mainspring which winds automatically because of the movement and the energy that is provided by the natural motion of the wearer’s wrist. This makes the need of manual winding unnecessary.

As long as the watch is being worn on a daily basis it will maintain power and does not require the need of winding even with the help of a watch winder.

Energy is provided to an automatic watch with the help of a rotor which is a half-disc metal weight that keeps the watch going with every movement of the wrist and automatically winds the mainspring. Even when the watch is not worn, this energy that is stored in the rotor keeps the unworn watch running for 24 to 48 hours.

But if the watch is not being worn for long intervals it is suggested not to leave the watch laying somewhere idle, but rather to invest in buying a watch winder. It is a great alternative to hand winding.
